Cult of Pedagogy
I’ve been following Cult of Pedagogy because they post a variety of content about different facets of education. They have a lot of posts in podcast form, which allows for more in depth discussion and explanation. I’ve learned about new perspectives on education and specific strategies to use in the classroom.
One of my favorite posts is The Magic of Mistakes: 4 Ways to Boost Critical Thinking with Mistake Analysis. In this post, I learned that the way teachers respond to mistakes is important, and preparing for and talking about mistakes can actually help students get a better understanding of the concept. Understanding the thought process behind those mistakes can help the teacher get a better understanding of what the student knows and help students to prevent making those mistakes again.
Another post I liked was Student-Made E-Books: A Beautiful Way to Demonstrate Learning. It outlines a specific type of project that students can do to demonstrate what they’ve learned at the end of a unit. I learned that this kind of assessment can be a good alternative to something like a paper because students might put more effort into it because it seems like they’re making a real product. It also teaches students additional skills while they are creating their e-books.
I also liked the post How to Create a Self-Paced Classroom. In this post, I learned self-paced learning builds self confidence, differentiates for students’ needs, and supports self regulation. To do self-paced learning, you have to let go of the idea of whole group direct instruction, but that doesn’t mean getting rid of whole group discussions and activities. It can also be set up so students are working together and helping each other with their work. You don’t have to give up collaborative work and community for a self-paced classroom.
